What Special Monthly Compensation covers

SMC pays above (or in place of) standard schedular compensation when disabilities are especially severe. SMC-K is an add-on; levels like L, S, R.1, and R.2/T generally replace schedular pay with a higher rate. Half-steps and combinations can change outcomes, so treat this tool as a planning aid.

Start with your combined rating and baseline pay chart figures, then model SMC scenarios here. Veterans exploring unemployability should also review the TDIU checker.

2026 rates used (effective December 1, 2025)

This calculator uses official veteran-alone SMC amounts (for example, SMC-K $139.87, SMC-L $4,900.83, SMC-S $4,408.53). Dependent add-ons can increase real awards. Confirm figures on VA.gov SMC rates or with an accredited representative. Not affiliated with the VA.
